Mathematics is the only school subject which requires prior knowledge. This knowledge begins in Grade 1, and until Grade 6, largely concerns the concrete concept of numbers.

In Grade 7 the learners are for the first time introduced to Algebraic concepts. Algebra in “normal” language is when x’s and y’s appear in Maths and this is when Mathematics changes from concrete to abstract.

The basics learnt in Grade 7 is very important preparation for High School Mathematics where Algebra is studied in a lot more detail. The ability to deal with numbers is still a necessary, but not sufficient skill, for success in Algebra.

The foundations for High School Mathematics are therefore laid in Grade 7 already!
